In 1993 Jesús del Rio decided to go back to his home village Masroig and buy a piece of land to grow a wine out of passion for wine and his homeland. Mas de la Abundancia is situated in the valley that starts from Gratallops in Priorat and ends in the forest above the village Masroig. This valley holds some of the most famous estates in Priorat and has the poor Licorella soil for which Priorat is famous. Despite being inside what the monks in the 13th century delimited as Priorat, Mas de la Abundancia, and only this small estate, has been kept outside the modern D.O Priorat. Jesús is fighting to receive the recognition he thinks it deserves. However, he says that “Maybe it’s better to be the best of Montsant rather than one among the great Priorats.” The vineyard is planted on typical Licorella rock. A large part is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest is divided between Garnacha and Cariñena. It is situated on a steep slope down from the small hermitage Ermita de la Consolació, overlooking the river at the bottom of the valley. Focus is on the vineyard. Rather than opting for maximum concentration, they try to find balance and life. Typically, his basic line Flvminis contains only 40% oak aged wine in order to keep the wine’s natural fruit complexity. It’s a wine that evolves in the glass and which emphasises balance, complexity and drinkability. 2002 was their first
vintage, and it is soon to be released a reserve wine from the best parts
of the vineyard. |
