About the vineyards The best way to get to Mas de la Abundancia is to start in Gratallops in Priorat and go down the valley La Gambosa, a valley that historically has been one of the most famous areas for top vineyards. The two hermitages in Priorat mark the end and the beginning of this excellent wine land. Going down, in the valley and its surroundings lie many of the most famous vineyards in Priorat. The valley ends with the other hermitage on the top of a steep hill above the river Siurana. This steep hill below Ermita de la Consolació is Mas de la Abundancia. By an administrative error, the far corner of this valley has been left outside Priorat and is situated in what is now D.O Montsant. There are no other vineyards in sight that are Montsant, but all around are Priorat. Frustratingly enough, the vineyard is inside what historically was mapped as Priorat by the monks in the 13th century. Below the poor top soil is the stony unfertile ground from which Priorat takes it fame – Licorella. The vineyard lies on a steep long slope with over 200 meters in altitude difference. The lower part is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. There is more water in that part, something that this grape variety needs. Because it is the best variety for this vineyard and because Jesús has a long time love for Cabernet based wines, about 60% of the vineyards are planted with low yielding Cabernet clones. The upper slopes are divided between old Garnacha and Cariñena. Even if the first
vintage sold publicly is 2002, Jesús planted already in 1993 –
1995, so there is a mixture of old and young vines in the vineyards giving
a medium age of about 15 years. Viticulture is purely organic. |
